2012 Plant Cell and Environment

Gibberellins (GAs), as a large group of tetracyclic diterpenoids, function as phytohormone essential for many aspects of plant growth and development, such as flower and seed development. The GA signals are processed by the GID1 GA receptor/DELLA repressor pathway and DELLA genes are able to down‐regulate GDSL family genes in flower buds and/or imbibed seeds.

In this study, enhancement of GA signalling through DELLA mutation or exogenous treatment of gibberellin acid A3 (GA3) resulted in the up‐regulated expression of five GDSL‐type Seed Fatty Acid Reducer (SFAR) genes in Arabidopsis. Gain-of-function of SFARs reduced the total content of seed fatty acid (FA) and led to a particular pattern of seed FA composition.
